Partner/Client: Curtin University, Bill Tai, Larry Lopez

Our challenge:
Curtin University, adjunct professor and Silicon Valley venture capitalist Bill Tai, and experienced business man Larry Lopez created WA Apps. A tech competition to identify great new app concepts in Western Australia. They tasked us with rebranding and developing the programme in 2011 for an international audience. Their ambition, to create an annual programme that would identify the best app concepts and the best entrepreneurs in Asia-Pacific. It needed to attract big names and big prizes from the tech and venture capital industries in order to give budding entrepreneurs and app developers the biggest leg-up possible.

What we created:
The OzAPP Awards programme launched in 2011. Since then it has gone from strength to strength, proving to be a catalyst for growth in the region. This project was never just an event-management gig for us. It was about much more, about doing something for our home, and the broader Asia-Pacific business community. Collaborating with visionary business people like Bill Tai and Larry Lopez, and first class investors such as QualcommVentures, we were able to develop Curtin University’s awards scheme to one that has rapidly grown in size and reputation. Innovators, investors and industry come together at OzAPP’s not only to compete, but to collaborate and to stimulate the local economy in the APAC region.

“There is a growing awareness in Silicon Valley that the Asia-Pacific region is a great source of innovation in the digital space and the Awards are providing a focal point for people to come and take a look for themselves”
Bill Tai, co-founder and global Venture Capitalist
